From Georgian townhouses, to Victorian terraces and Edwardian semis, London is full of period houses. However, while they were perfect for their time, families have changed and how we use our homes is also different. Channel 4’s George Clarke shows us all what can be done with a bit of imagination and vision, in his show Old House New Home. The programme follows home owners who completely overhaul their period properties to make them work for today’s lifestyles.

At Simply Extend, we don’t only do extensions, we can help you transform your home with a top to bottom refurbishment that can include a complete reconfiguration, loft conversion, extension and basement conversion. Simply Extend is part of the Simply Construction Group that includes Simply Loft and Simply Basement.

We use clever design and space saving materials that help to maximise light and space in your home. Each home is unique; so, to ensure we are making the most of every square metre, our team creates bespoke plans that will enhance your home. Here are some of our tried and tested methods:

Dig down: basement conversion

Popular in the capital, basement or cellar conversions are not just the preserve of billionaires living in Belgravia, Hampstead, South Kensington and Chelsea. Neither do you need a huge house. As long as you can get planning permission, and almost all basement conversions now need planning permission, it is often possible to build a basement conversion.

One of our most ambitious projects involved us undertaking not just a basement conversion, but a whole reconfiguration of a typical Victorian mews house. Nestled down a picturesque cobbled street near Notting Hill, we built a whole new subterranean floor, complete with an outside area and reconfigured the ground floor to create a large open lounge area, complete with a log burner. This house was transformed from a cramped little mews property to a stunning light and open home that works for the whole family. For more on this build click here.

Go up: Loft conversion

A loft conversion can be a low impact and cost-efficient way to gain space and transform your home. Whether you want to add extra bedrooms, bathrooms or a home office (or all three if there is room) your loft is a versatile space that can be a game changer. While you are getting a loft conversion, you can also opt to have an extension done at the same time, like one of our clients in North London.

This typical Victorian property in Highbury was transformed by building both a loft conversion and rear kitchen extension. This large-scale renovation included a rear dormer loft conversion, complete with en-suite shower, as well as a large rear and side kitchen extension. For more about this build click here.

An extension, even a small one, can make a huge difference. Whether you opt for a side return extension or a full-scale rear or double story extension, you can create beautiful family friendly spaces that will grow with you. We don’t only do extensions at the back of the house, we also design and build front extensions and reconfigure homes.

In one project, we created a single storey rear extension, a front extension and converted the garage to create a large kitchen-diner-living area, a luxury bathroom and also updated other parts of the family home. The biggest transformation is in the living areas. The rear extension created several new living spaces in one open-plan area. For more about this project click here.
