Bifold doors are exterior doors which fold in on themselves, with the panels grouped to one side in an ordered fashion. They can open up your exterior wall up to 90% which allows your garden space to continue on from your extension easily. If you want lots of natural light in your extension then they can be a great choice, as when they are shut, they can still allow in lots of natural light.
You can choose from different types of bifold doors, with differences in the colour of the frames and the material. You can choose between aluminium and timber frames for your bifolds. Aluminium frames create a modern and stylish look, whilst timber frames can help to create a more traditional style. You can decide on the colour of your frames too, with aluminium bifolds being able to come in grey, black, white or any RAL colours. A sliding door typically consists of a steady glass panel that has a moving glass panel which slides over it to open up your rear wall. Sliding doors open up to 75% and they allow a less disrupted view outside than bifold doors, due to less individual panels and their frames obstructing the view outside. It can be difficult to spot if a sliding door is open or shut, so if you have children make sure to keep an eye on them when they are running about!
You can choose between aluminium, PVC or timber framed sliding doors which have different appearances and benefits. Aluminium is cost effective and low maintenance, typically being quite slim. Just like with the bifold doors, you can choose from a wide range of colours for your aluminium frames, which can alter how your sliding doors appear from the interior and exterior. Timber frames can be stained to appear however you would like them to, which is great if you have a particular type of wood being used in the extension for countertops or cupboards.
In summary, if you want to have an unobstructed view outside, opting for sliding doors will give you the view that you want. However, if you want to be able to open your home up to your garden as much as possible, bifolds will be the best choice for you.
