Wrap Around Kitchen Extension Case Study, South London
Brief: Single storey wrap-around extension to a middle terrace house on Scholars Road in Balham. This created an open plan kitchen diner, ground floor toilet and utility space as well as a 1st floor bathroom re-arrangement.
Structural Details
From the outside it is easy to notice the pitched roof on the side extension compared to the flat roof of the main extension on the rear of the house. The pitched roof has been fitted with skylight windows, which adds a different angle of lighting to the kitchen to make it brighter. The wrap-around extension is a great way of adding more room in your property without extending far out into precious garden space.
The structure of this build helps to segment the kitchen into its functioning parts, removing the dining area from any stress experienced in the kitchen. By extending this kitchen, it feels as if not one, but two, rooms have been created with these adjoined sections.
This build has many exquisite details, with the central island in the kitchen making this kitchen a hub for family life. By incorporating a sky light into this extension, the clients have maximised the amount of natural light they are drawing into the room, emphasising its brightness and energy. This is further accentuated with contrasting colours in the décor, bright reds mixed with matte greens, against light wooden furniture. The stunning polished brass handles and kitchen taps make this kitchen elegant and traditional, especially with the in-built bookshelf on the side of the island.
The large glass doors that open into the garden allow the extension to feel large and spacious, whilst not taking away much garden space.
