Brief: Design and build a single-storey side return rear kitchen extension to a semi-detached property in Southwark, Central London, creating an open-plan kitchen and dining area plus a utility room.
We attended our client’s home in Southwark, London to carry out a free site survey. They had the vision of creating an open-plan dining and kitchen area as well as a new utility room. Our architects determined that a single-storey side return extension would make the most of their space and budget.

As always, our architects carefully considered the style and placement of windows in this kitchen extension project. To allow for maximum natural light in the space, our team of experts incorporated a skylight above the seating area, casement windows at opposing ends of the space as well as Velux windows in the kitchen. This combination of sizes and styles of windows has created a light and airy space perfect for enjoying mealtimes with family and friends.
Our clients have chosen to have built-in seating around the edges of the dining area. This not only makes great use of this space but helps to create a lovely, relaxed feel to the room. By using a pendant light above the central dining table and a rug underneath they have carved out another distinct area within this lovely space. The use of subtle greys and browns, with a splash of grey and blue in the furniture and fixtures creates a calm and welcoming space.
This blue and grey kitchen colour scheme continues through into the kitchen itself, which is a traditional galley style. Our clients have chosen integrated appliances which give a seamless look to this kitchen space. The cabinets above and below the worktop offer ample storage and the addition of stylish shutters on the casement window gives privacy and helps reduce sunlight when required.
The choice of wooden flooring nicely complements and contrasts the kitchen units and stretches through to the dining space and living area, creating a smooth transition between the rooms. This new kitchen and dining space flows into the living space and garden which is accessed by the patio doors.
