When you decide to invest in a home extension, it can be exciting to plan every inch of your new space. What colour scheme will you have? What type of kitchen cabinet? Velux skylights or flush glazed? There are so many components to think about and plan, that it can be easy to forget about one major part of your extension – the exterior. At Simply Extend, our surveyors are on hand to guide you through how to make your extension look great from the outside as well as the inside!
On the exterior wall of an extension, you can typically only have materials that match the existing materials of the original house. Whilst this can limit your exterior options for your extension, you can still transform how it looks with the doors, windows and roof type you pick. Roofing structure plays a big part in how your extension will look from the outside and you can choose between having a flat or a pitched roof. A flat roof is completely horizontal, whilst a pitched roof is sloped. You can choose from different window options based off of the roof type you pick, as explained in our comprehensive extension guide.

If you choose a flat roof, you can make your extension look bigger with roof lanterns that add height to your extension. They can increase the amount of light that enters your extension and reflect it around the room. Equally, you can opt for a sleek look with flush glazed panels that are an effortless continuation of one part of your roof to the next. This is a very popular option, with different colours of aluminium frame being available to choose from. For a pitched roof, we love Velux skylights which can open to let in the summer air and open your extension up to the sky.
You can change the way your extension looks from the outside through your choice of doors. Typically, there are two main options for extension doors – bifold or sliding. Bifold doors fold in on themselves when you open them which is great if you want to save space or want your extension to effortlessly mix with your garden in the summer months. You can choose whether you want white or black doors, which can make a big difference to how your extension appears. Sliding doors slide back on themselves, opening up half of your extension to your garden. These are a nice option if you prefer to have a slight breeze coming into the house rather than opening up your house completely.

If you want the rear wall to be more solid, instead of consisting of mainly glass for these larger door options, you could choose to have patio doors. These are a very simplistic pair of doors which open your extension into the garden discreetly. If you want to make a statement, you can have Crittall windows that create a statement glass feature, with bold black frames that steal the show.

However you want your extension to appear from the outside, our surveyors are on hand to talk you through all of the options available to you. Give us a call today on 0800 917 7571 to book your free, no obligation site survey today!
