As the weather gets warmer, many of us are beyond excited to be able to host guests in our homes and gardens again following the recent lockdown. For those who have had an extension, it can be both exciting and daunting, as none of us have had to think about preparing our new spaces for company in a very long time! But be rest assured, we have many handy tips to help you get your extension summer, and guest, ready.
One of the many beautiful features of a home or kitchen extension, is the added light you can have from skylights and glazing. In spring and summertime, lighting is incredibly important to keep a space feeling light and airy, letting in some much-needed cooler air whilst also celebrating the stunning sunlight. We love the VELUX skylights many of our clients opt for in their extensions, as it invites the summer sun into the home and can easily be opened to ventilate the rooms too. To prepare your skylights for the summer sun, make sure you have had them cleaned both inside and out, getting all of those pesky cobwebs dusted away!

An important feature of a home extension in the summertime is the rear door into the garden. Most of our clients choose to have either a bifolding or sliding glass door, with various types of aluminium or PVC frames. By choosing a glass door, you can bring in even more light and create a continuous feel from home to garden that works wonderfully in the brighter and warmer months. For those who prefer the shade and like to stay out of the heat, a different but equally lovely option would be to have French doors, which can be painted any colour you like and help to separate the home and garden. Whichever you choose, make sure you’ve given them a wipe down and get any glass sparkling away in the sun!
It can be difficult to choose a colour theme for your extension when it is originally built, as the colours you choose need to work in every season all year round. We love this recent kitchen extension we completed, which featured pale walls but a gorgeous yellow splash-back. This adds that welcome touch of brightness and colour that can be easily accentuated or dulled season-to-season. In the summer, you can brighten any kitchen with a bright bunch of flowers or artwork on the walls, and in the winter this can be replaced with cosy cushions on seats and warm blankets thrown over the back of your chairs. Don’t be afraid to use a bright colour that pops in the summer, as it can easily be made to work in the winter months too.
