When it comes to windows in your new extension, there are several options for you to choose from. However, some of your options will be limited depending on the type of roof you have chosen to have. On a pitched roof, you can have VELUX skylights and fixed-panel fully glazed windows. If you have a flat roof, you can have roof lanterns and dome lights, which you cannot have if your roof is pitched. Each of these types of windows look and function differently, and therefore you need to think about what you want your windows to do before you choose them!
The most popular choice of glazing is a VELUX skylight, which is a window in the roof that can open to allow warm air out and fresh air into your extension. It is a great way of getting more natural light into your space, that can help to make a kitchen feel clean and energised in the mornings. If you are choosing to have many windows in your extension, or are having a Crittall wall, it can be incredibly useful having a skylight that opens, as lots of glass will naturally trap more heat inside your home. If you do not want a skylight which opens, you can choose to have fixed-panel fully glazed windows, which appear the same as a VELUX skylight but do not open.
A creative glazing option in your home or kitchen extension can be a roof lantern. This is a glass structure which looks like a hut on top of your roof, which allows in lots of light from different angles. It also adds extra height to your extension, so you can quite literally have your head in the clouds! They can look spectacular, with black aluminium framing, directing light to a specific section of the room. You can also choose to have a raised flat roof light, which is not pointed and instead lies flat but is constructed as a higher platform on the roof. You can also choose to have a dome roof light, which looks like a viewing pod on the roof of your extension. It brings in light from all angles and can be a great addition to a kitchen space.
Finally, you can choose to have any bespoke glazing you like. This can be great if you want a glass wall that fits to the slope of your roof, or you want to attract attention to a specific area of your extension.
